Weight training could benefit the aged

Maintaining healthy muscles becomes more difficult as the body ages, according to new research from the University of Nottingham.

The study found that weight training may benefit older people in helping them retain muscle mass.

Andrew Harrop, head of public policy for Age Concern and Help the Aged, said that exercise classes such as Tai Chi, aqua aerobics, walking or dancing can benefit people over the age of 50 who need to build muscle.

"Staying active in older age helps improve and develop strength in your muscles, stamina, coordination and balance, which can help with everyday tasks such as picking up grandchildren or climbing the stairs," he explained.

"Strong muscles, particularly in your legs, help maintain good balance and minimises the risk of falling."

According to a report published in the Cochrane Library in July, regular progressive resistance training can help improve physical function and increase muscle strength as we age.
