Weekend lie-in could form part of healthcare plan

A good night's sleep at the weekend could form part of healthcare plans following a new report highlighting the benefits of a weekly lie-in.

A US study, published in the journal Sleep, found that a lengthy period of rest can help the body and mind recover from several nights of lost sleep during the working week.

This could have a range of health benefits, with a lack of sleep associated with problems such as stress, an inability to think clearly and a weakened immune system.

The study restricted the sleep of a group of participants to no more than four hours for a period of five consecutive nights.

They were then permitted a period of recovery sleep for one night, ranging from zero to ten hours.

Daily assessments showed that at least ten hours of recovery sleep would be necessary for sleep-restricted participants to match the functional levels of the control group.

"Lifestyles that involve chronic sleep restriction during the workweek and during days off work may result in continuing build-up of sleep pressure and in an increased likelihood of loss of alertness and increased errors," said principal investigator David F Dinges.

According to findings from this year's annual Sleep Professions study by Travelodge, 75 per cent of Britain's workforce is getting less than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night.
