Warning over statin side-effects

Published on 21/05/2010
New concerns have arisen over the possible side-effects of the cholesterol-lowering drugs statins.

Research suggests that some forms of the drugs, which are taken by millions of Brits to help prevent strokes and heart disease, could cause liver, kidney, muscle and eye problems.

There are already several side-effects associated with statins, including insomnia, constipation or diarrhoea, headaches and loss of appetite.

But a study by experts at the University of Nottingham, published in the British Medical Journal, has shown that in some circumstances statins can lead to liver dysfunction, acute kidney failure, the muscle condition myopathy and cataracts.

The researchers advised that GPs should take more care when prescribing the drugs and monitor those with a high-risk of developing side-effects.

However, experts still believe the life-saving potential of statins outweighs the risk of any damage they can cause.

Commenting on the results of the study, June Davison, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: "We already know that a small number of people taking statins experience unwanted side effects.

"However, for people with, or at high risk of heart disease, the benefits of statins far outweigh this risk."

Around 2.6 million people in the UK are living with coronary heart disease, the most common heart condition in the country.
