Walking linked to reduced female stroke risk

Published on 09/04/2010
Leisurely physical activity such as walking could help reduce the risk of stroke in women, new research suggests.

A study recently published in the medical journal Stroke found that women who walk on a regular basis are less likely to develop the life-threatening condition.

In response to the findings, Moira Halstead, communications manager at charity Walking for Health, said that walking is great for helping to prevent stokes and coronary heart disease.

She advised: "Building walking into everyday life is key... Anyone can do it and the people that are sedentary are often the people that benefit most from walking.

"It's shown really good retention rates compared to going to the gym, partly because of the social aspects of walking in a group."

According to the British Heart Foundation, achieving the recommended levels of moderate physical activity can reduce premature deaths by between 20 and 30 per cent.

The Department of Health warns that stroke is the third biggest cause of death in the UK and the largest single cause of severe disability. Each year more than 110,000 people in England will suffer from a stroke.
