Use of moisturisers in eczema healthcare plans called into question

Published on 21/10/2010
People with eczema may want to remove the use of moisturisers from healthcare plans to treat the condition.

According to a new study, moisturisers commonly used to treat eczema, such as aqueous cream BP, may actually contain substances that irritate the skin and make the condition worse.

The study's authors, from the University of Bath, suggest oil-based creams may be a better alternative.

Published in the British Journal of Dermatology, the study examined the effects of aqueous cream BP on healthy volunteers who applied the substance to their forearms daily for a period of four weeks.

It was found that the cream reduced the thickness of healthy skin in the protective outer layer, called the stratum corneum.

This was put down to the presence in the cream of a detergent, called sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which can increase the permeability of the skin barrier and cause irritation.

"Our study has found that rubbing aqueous cream containing SLS into the skin thins this protective barrier, making the skin more susceptible to irritation by chemicals," commented the researchers.

"So to use this cream on eczemous skin, which is already thin and vulnerable to irritation, is likely to make the condition even worse."

In the UK one in five children and one in 12 adults have eczema.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
