Untrained NHS healthcare assistants putting patients at risk

Published on 23/09/2011

Peter Carter, the head of the Royal College of Nursing, has spoken out about the number of untrained NHS healthcare assistants who are relied on too heavily in the UK, putting patients without private health insurance at risk.

Healthcare assistants are employed to help nurses with simple tasks like washing and feeding, but end up mobilising people, catheterising people, and dealing with nutrition and hygiene without regulation training.

Peter Carter said: "Many hospitals employ healthcare assistants as opposed to registered nurses, and many of them don't give them as much as an hour's training."

Carter also voiced his view that some nursing degrees focus too much on theory, and do not have enough practical training. Carter added that many newly trained nurses are “simply not up to the mark” having not spend enough time on hospital wards.

"While the vast majority of student nurses are well trained, there are a few cases where this training is not of the level it should be."

This comes after news that that around 2,000 nursing places have been cut in England, whilst other nurses are sourced from abroad.

Concerns have also been raised by Lord Winston about the poor standards of English of NHS nurses from Eastern Europe.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
