Undernourishment putting added strain on UK health care

Published on 21/10/2009
More than three million people in the UK are either undernourished or at serious risk of malnutrition, according to one GP.

General practitioner Dr Sarah Jarvis said that the elderly and people with medical conditions tend to be most affected and vulnerable to lack of nutrition.

Patients recently released from hospital, those in care homes as well as dementia and cancer sufferers are at greater risk of developing the condition, she warned.

"A lot of people who don't have a good diet with all the right nutrients can be short particularly of vitamins, but also of minerals," Dr Jarvis commented.

"That can make them more prone to anything from breaking bones to getting infections, to their immune system being affected, to wounds not healing, or to any other complication."

NHS figures show that malnourished patients have increased healthcare costs with 65 per cent more GP visits, 82 per cent more hospital admissions and 30 per cent longer hospital stays.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
