Unacceptable levels of cleanliness in NHS hospital in Glasgow

Published on 04/10/2011

Patients in Glasgow may need to look into purchasing private health insurance after a health watchdog raised ‘significant concerns’ over cleanliness in the Southern General NHS Hospital in Glasgow.

Officials from the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) visited the Southern General Hospital in August, and discovered unacceptable levels of cleanliness.

Their unannounced inspection found dirty toilet seats and commodes, blood spots on blood monitoring machines and a dirty defibrillator.

In addition, they reported ‘large amounts’ of dust in several departments and wards, and a general ‘poor’ level of cleaning. In ward 10, they found thick dust under beds, dusty floors, and a puddle of unidentified fluid by the toilet.

The inspectors carried out a second unannounced visit, and found ‘significant improvements in equipment cleanliness but little progress in environmental cleaning’. The chief inspector said she expected improvements to be made "as a matter of priority".

Rory Farrelly, the health board's acute director of nursing, said:

"Immediate remedial actions have been taken to address the issues in the report which will ensure greater consistency in service delivery.

NHS hospitals have often come under criticism for standards of cleanliness, and are also prone to spreading superbugs. Private health insurance will give you treatment in a private hospital of your choice, free from risk of dangerous superbugs.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
