Unacceptable care in Swansea NHS hospital may have contributed to patient death

Published on 28/09/2011

Unacceptable levels of care in an NHS hospital could have contributed to the premature death of a patient, a watchdog has discovered.

Paul Ridd was 53 when he died of respiratory issues in Swansea’s NHS Morriston Hospital. He was admitted to Morriston Hospital on December 31 2008 and underwent bowel surgery.

After contracting pneumonia in intensive care, Mr Ridd, who suffered from severe learning difficulties, was prematurely transferred to a general ward, and died on 23 January 2009.

Peter Tyndall from the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales called his care ‘abject’ and ‘dire’. When investigating the general ward he discovered a failure of supervision, inadequate examination by doctors, and a failure to care for him in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act.

"Nursing care on the ward was abject," said Mr Tyndall. Mr Ridd’s family have claimed that his carer was "constantly begging" the nursing staff to examine him.

The University Health Board has apologised, and said the hospital has since increased the number of nursing staff, appointed a new ward sister, and carried out staff educating and training.

However, recent news has indicated that this may not be an isolated case in the NHS, which has to cut more than £20 billion from its budget over the next 4 years.

Peter Carter, the head of the Royal College of Nursing, recently spoke out about the number of untrained NHS healthcare assistants who are putting patient’s health at risk.

The risk of superbugs is also shown to be at an all-time high- nearly 400 cases of new super-resistant bacteria have been discovered just this year in NHS hospitals.

Patients with private health insurance will be guaranteed treatment at a superbug free private hospital of their choice, in a room with excellent facilities.
