UK health care falling short of international standards

Published on 15/12/2009
Despite growing rates of chronic diseases such as asthma and diabetes, the quality of health care for these conditions falls short of good practices.

That is according to a recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which revealed the level of primary care and health expenditure varies significantly from country to country.

Commenting on the findings, OECD secretary-general Angel Gurria said: "There are opportunities for all countries to improve the performance of their health care system, and making such improvements does not necessarily require higher spending."

In 2007, the UK spent $2,992 (£1,845) on health – slightly above the OECD average of $2,984.

The study predicted that growing rates of child and adult obesity are likely to drive health spending higher in the coming decades.

Most recent NHS statistics show that in 2005, almost 871,000 prescriptions items were dispensed for the treatment of obesity compared with just over 127,000 in 1999.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.

Good value and the advisor was very helpful and recommended the best policy for my grandson. I would definitely use this service again and recommend to others.
