UK children suffering from delayed brain tumour diagnosis

Published on 10/08/2009
Many children in the UK are suffering from some preventable forms of disability due to a poor diagnosis of brain tumours, it has been claimed.

A recent study from the University of Nottingham's Children's Brain Tumour Research Centre funded by the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust found that prolonged diagnoses can lead to long-term survivors of childhood tumours being up to ten times more likely to suffer from a disability.

Blindness was found to be one of the most common conditions affecting these patients.

David Walker, professor of paediatric oncology at the research centre, said: "Our study showed that the UK health system is the slowest system for making this diagnosis compared to reports from other countries.

"It takes more than 13 weeks in the UK to make this diagnosis for half of the patients, whist in the US and Poland this is achieved within five weeks."

As many as 450 children are diagnosed with a brain tumour in the UK every year.

Professor Walker added a lack of diagnosis can have "life-long consequences".

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
