Transplant patient dies after receiving smoker's lungs

Published on 15/06/2010
The father of a woman who died following a double lung transplant has criticised doctors for giving her organs from a smoker of 30 years.

Lynsey Scott, who suffered from cystic fibrosis, died months after surgery last year at Wythenshawe Hospital to replace her lungs.

However, she was not told that the donor had smoked and now her father Allan Scott has called for patients to be given more information about transplants.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "I can honestly say she would have been horrified to have known those lungs were from a smoker and quite definitely she would have refused that operation."

He expressed his understanding that "marginal organs" will often need to be used in transplants, but said patients should be made aware about the organs they are receiving before surgery.

The transplant in question was undertaken by the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Trust, which said it had followed national guidelines in using the smoker's lungs.

Currently, more than 16.5 million people are on the NHS Organ Donor Registration.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
