'Train crash' NHS reforms to drive private medical cover uptake?

Published on 09/12/2010
Recent comments on the NHS by a senior health service manager could encourage more people to take out private medical cover.

Robert Creighton, chief executive of NHS Ealing, has blasted government reforms he says are driving the NHS to a "bloody awful train crash".

The government is to hand control of NHS budgets over to consortia of GPs, while at the same time reorganising the health service to significantly reduce the number of managers it employs.

Speaking to The King's Fund think tank, Mr Creighton said he will now have to run two primary care trusts with 50 per cent of the staff because of the cutbacks.

The Mirror quotes him as saying: "I've got to completely clear out my top team and make a whole set of new appointments. In that time I am not spending any time thinking about patient care, money or anything else.

"This could be a bloody awful train crash. It could collapse."

It follows a recent report from health news provider Pulse, that found the number of NHS patients waiting longer than 18 weeks for treatment has soared since the government stopped enforcing waiting list targets.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
