Tanning salons putting young Brits at cancer risk

Published on 15/01/2010
The secretary of state for health Andy Burnham has called for a ban on under 18s using tanning salons in the UK.

He announced the government's backing of the private member's bill this week following a report from Cancer Research indicating the popularity of sunbeds among the nation's youth.

Overall, six per cent of children aged between 11 and 17 in England admitted that they had used a sunbed.

Mr Burnham commented: "The scientific evidence is clear - sunbeds increase your risk of getting skin cancer. It is far too easy for young people to use sunbeds and I am determined to take action to protect them."

The bill is due to be introduced and have its second reading in the House of Commons on January 29th.

According to Cancer Research, more than 2,600 people die from skin cancer each year in the UK, with the majority resulting from malignant melanoma.

Melanoma is one of the few cancers to affect young adults and is the most common cancer among 15-34 year olds.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
