Survival rates among premature babies have not improved, study shows

Published on 26/04/2010
Despite improving medical techniques, the number of babies born before the 24 week limit for abortions has not improved since the early 1990s, it has been revealed.

A study by doctors at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary looked at infant deaths among 229 babies born at either 22 or 23 weeks between 1993 and 2007.

The results, published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, showed that a total of 19 survived.

Six survived between 1993 and 1997, six between 1997 and 2002, and seven from 2003 and 2007.

However, the amount of time the babies lived for grew on average from 11 hours to 3.7 days over the same time frame.

Co-author Dr Nicholas Embleton said: "Overall survival has not changed, but non-survivors endured significantly longer durations of intensive care.

"Some will feel that the prolonged periods of intensive, but unsuccessful, care demonstrated in this report are either futile or inappropriate."

The infant mortality rate in England is higher than the EU average, statistics show, with 4.8 babies dying out of 1,000.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
