Study finds genes involved in breast cancer development

Published on 06/10/2009
Scientists in the UK are on the brink of identifying the process by which breast cells become cancerous, it has been revealed.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered a gene called NRG1 (neuregulin-1) that can be linked to more than half of all breast cancer cases.

The findings, published in the journal Oncogene this week, suggest that more effective treatment may be given to patients if experts can decipher the specific type of breast cancer involved.

Dr Paul Edwards, from the University of Cambridge, said: "In the immediate future, the main importance of this discovery is that losing Neuregulin-1 is a very important part of becoming a cancer cell, and this should tell us a lot about how cancer works."

According to Breast Cancer Care some 46,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year – one person every 11 minutes.

Data from the Office for National Statistics show that breast cancer is the most common form of the disease in England.
