Study debunks allergy 'hygiene hypothesis'

Published on 11/09/2009
Although many people think that exposing children to infections may protect them from allergies such as asthma or eczema, a new study has found otherwise.

The American Thoracic Society has published research that challenges the popular 'hygiene hypothesis' which suggests that being exposed to allergens strengthens the immune system.

Chief executive of Allergy UK Muriel Simmons noted that there were many different ways a person could develop an allergy.

As well as being "too clean" she also noted that the likes of passive smoking "or living in an area of high pollution" could contribute.

"Then of course [there is] the hereditary factor," she added.

However, Ms Simmons suggested that exposure to the outside world could still be a beneficial thing.

"We would actually say that by encouraging them to exercise and to run around and play as normally as possible, all of that would help," she concluded.

According to statistics from Asthma UK, around 5.4 million people are currently receiving treatment for the condition, 4.3 million of which are adults, equating to one in 12 of the population.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
