Stress affecting Britain's long-term health

Published on 11/02/2010
As many as 40 million people in the UK admit to suffering from stress and anxiety, increasing their risk of developing chronic illnesses.

That is according to new research from Mintel, which found just 17 per cent of Brits claim not to have any worries.

Money concerns, relationships, health problems and work-related stress are all having a growing impact on people's lives and long-term medical needs.

Ann McCracken, chair of the International Stress Management Association UK, said: "Stress is a health outcome, worry is a potential cause.

"The genders do have very different coping mechanisms. Men very much tend to hold in their concerns and pressures."

People under pressure are advised to socialise with friends, participate in sport and other leisure activities to banish the blues.

Health insurance provider Aviva recently reported that almost a quarter of Brits believe mounting stress from the current economic climate is to blame for rising staff sickness rates.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
