Smoking, drinking and poor diet could lead to healthcare plan for oral cancers

Published on 06/10/2010
Those who drink and smoke heavily and do not eat enough fruit and veg may well need a healthcare plan to treat certain cancers, new research has suggested.

Scientists at the University of Aberdeen have found that these factors are the major triggers of mouth, oesophagus and larynx cancer in under 50s.

Known collectively as upper aero-digestive tract (UADT) cancers, these diseases are responsible for the deaths of 10,000 people in the UK each year, with numbers rising.

The five year study looked at 350 patients under the age of 50 with these cancers, and 400 patients free of these diseases.

It was found that in 88 per cent of cases, the UADT cancers were caused by smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol and/or a lack of fruit and vegetables in a person's diet.

Gary Macfarlane, professor of epidemiology at the University of Aberdeen, who led the study, said: "The increase in the occurrence of UADT cancers in this age group is likely to be linked to increased alcohol consumption and future studies will determine whether binge drinking carries a particularly high risk."

Mouth cancers have a higher proportion of deaths per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer or skin melanoma.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
