Shortgage of NHS midwives as Britian's birthrate increases

Published on 15/09/2011

Parts of England are facing dangerous shortages of NHS midwives as Britain’s birthrate rises by 22% in 20 years.

Whilst the number of midwives has increased by 17.7% in the last 10 years, the country’s birthrate has risen 19.9% in the same period.

The Royal College of Midwives has said that 4,700 more midwives are needed across England, and the NHS postcode lottery means some areas are worse than others.

The East Midlands and the east of England have a shortage of 41%, and the South East is more than a third short of staff, requiring an extra 1,015 midwives.

In contrast, the North East requires only 91 extra staff, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do not have midwife shortages at the moment.

The Royal College of Midwives recommends around 91 midwives for a medium-sized maternity unit. As obesity levels rise and the average age of mothers increase, it is more important than ever to meet these figures.

Cathy Warwick, general secretary of the RCM, said: "It is also not just about numbers. Births are also becoming increasingly complex, needing more of midwives' time.

"The combination of this and the rising birthrate is a dangerous cocktail threatening the safety and quality of maternity care.

"It means that too many maternity units across England are under-staffed and under-resourced to meet the demands made of them."

Whilst private medical insurance does not cover the cost of a simple childbirth, it may cover you in the case of a medical emergency. Compare health insurance policies online now to see if you can avoid the NHS cuts and shortages.
