Shortage of jobs for trainee doctors in the UK

Published on 11/11/2011

A leading physician at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow has warned that trainee doctors are at ‘the end of their tether’ over restricted career opportunities.

Ian Anderson said at the college's Triennial Conference in Glasgow that he was "deeply concerned" that career paths for doctors in training have become "much more difficult and even restricted".

He said: "What we are seeing are trainees entering programmes with every expectation that with the hard work necessary to complete certification, they would embark on a career as a consultant. That seems nowadays to be by no means assured.”

"We can't afford to turn off and disillusion highly-talented and motivated individuals in the up-and-coming generation."

Last month, a House of Lords committee warned that patients without private medical insurance being put at ‘unacceptable risk’ by continental doctors and nurses, who are working in the UK without any formal NHS training.

Currently, the NHS is being forced to accredit EU medical staff even if their training is years out of date or below the acceptable UK standards, in order to comply with EU freedom of movement requirements.

ActiveQuote recently estimated that if just 5% more people took out a health insurance policy over the next twelve months, the NHS could save an extra £2.5 billion on last year from its budget.

With a new specialty doctor earning upwards of £36,807, just 5% more people taking out a health insurance policy could pay the wages of over 6792 UK doctors.

In addition, about 1,000 nurses in Scotland are set to be lost in the coming year, Labour claimed, on top of the 1,700 nursing posts which have already been scrapped.

With nursing salaries starting at around £21,000, just 5% more people taking out a health insurance policy could pay the wages of over 118,000 NHS nurses.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
