Scientists investigate Britain's relationship with food

Published on 30/03/2010
Brits are slowly learning about the brain chemistry and neurological triggers behind harmful habits such as binge eating and unhealthy food consumption.

While many Brits are aware that controlling weight and staying fit is key to general health and wellbeing, they do not necessarily understand the science behind their behaviour.

Susan Ringwood, chief executive of health organisation beat, said: "There is some growing understanding among the general public that eating disorders are a serious condition.

"Everybody has had the same government messages about five-a-day and eating well, but sometimes it isn't that easy for people to make those changes in their everyday lives."

The comments follow new research published by Nature Neuroscience, which linked the brain mechanisms associated with compulsive eating to those involved in cases of drug addiction.

Recent campaigns from the Department of Health aim to tackle rising obesity rates in the UK by improving Britain's attitude to and relationship with food.

A great service from the initial call, to finalising the agreement. I would highly recommend to my family and friends.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
