Royal Liverpool Hospital admits liability in iron poisoning case

Published on 07/08/2009
An eight year legal battle between two brothers and the Royal Liverpool Hospital has come to an end.

The Merseyside hospital has admitted that it poisoned Liam and Paul McNeely for 25 years, the BBC reported.

Both of the pair suffered from a rare form of anaemia and were poisoned with the blood transfusions they received from the hospital, which although lacking iron, caused their organs to store up too much of the mineral .

Commenting on finding out that they were suffering with iron overload, Liam said: "It turned out it was caused from having too many blood transfusions without having the necessary treatment. I was in shock."

Consultant haematologist at the hospital, Patrick Chu, said the hospital "accepted liability" and had "apologised directly to the family".

Paul now relies on the help of carers, while Liam suffers from diabetes and osteoporosis.

The pair both suffer with pyruvate kinase deficiency, which causes red blood cells to break down too quickly as a result of a lack of the enzyme pyruvate kinase.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
