Rise in Type 2 diabetes could soon be halted with the development of a new pill

Published on 05/10/2011

After health experts in Ireland and Wales recently warned about the rise in Type 2 diabetes, scientists have claimed that a new pill could soon be developed to treat and prevent the disease.

The study, carried out by US scientists, looked at diabetic mice. Researchers discovered that a compound produced naturally in the body, called nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), can restore normal blood sugar metabolism.

The diabetic mice had reduced levels of a molecule called NAD that harvests energy into nutrients which cells can use. NAD is too toxic to be administered directly, but is derived directly from NMN in both humans and mice.

After being injected with NMN, both male and female diabetic mice showed dramatically improved responses to glucose- tolerance to glucose was completely restored in female mice, and improved in male.

Scientists, publishing their results online in Cell Metabolism, believe that a pill could soon be developed containing NMN which could be taken like a daily vitamin, to prevent or treat Type 2 diabetes.

'Once we can get a grade of NMN that humans can take, we would really like to launch a pilot human study,' said study leader Dr Shin-ichiro Imai, from Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis.

This comes after news that health experts in Wales and Ireland have warned that diabetes is reaching crisis level.

Diabetes UK Wales Wales national director Dai Williams said "a massive awareness campaign as a matter of urgency" is needed to raise awareness about the disease.

The charity said numbers diagnosed with diabetes in Wales increased by 7,000 in the last year.Treating diabetes and its complications is already costing the Welsh NHS around £500m.

The Diabetes Federation of Ireland also said that one in three Irish people has a family member with diabetes.

Private medical insurance holders often have access to drugs not available on the NHS. Certain insurers like PruHealth also reward you for eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and not smoking.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
