Regular breaks from desk could provide health boost for private medical cover holders

Private medical cover holders could benefit from regular breaks from sitting at their desks while at work, it has been suggested.

A new study has found that those who take regular breaks from their desks, even when as short as only a minute, are likely to have better health than those who do not.

Published in the European Heart Journal, the study analysed data from 4,757 people aged 20 and over who took part in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003 and 2006.

The participants had been fitted with a device which monitored walking or running activity, with measurements taken of waist circumference, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood fats.

It was found those who sat down for long periods without getting up had a larger waist circumference and lower levels of good HDL cholesterol.

"Overall, for length of sedentary time, the most clinically significant findings were for blood fats and markers of insulin resistance," said lead researcher Dr Genevieve Healy of the University of Queensland.

"For the number of breaks in sedentary time, the most significant differences were observed for waist circumference. The top 25 per cent of people who took the most breaks had, on average, a 4.1cm smaller waist circumference than those in the lowest 25 per cent."
