Recession causing mental health problems

Published on 01/09/2009
The recession may leave more people facing the risk of mental health problems, an expert has claimed.

Katie Leason, spokesperson for Rethink, has claimed that the current economic circumstances may affect conditions such as anxiety and depression.

"There has been a rise in anti-depressant prescriptions being given out by doctors," she said.

"People are at risk of all mental health problems when there are difficult circumstances in their lives."

According to the Mental Health Foundation, one in four people will experience some kind of mental health issue within the course of a year.

The most common disorders include mixed anxiety and depression and women are more likely to be treated for a problem than men.

It is not only adults that are affected, with ten per cent of children suffering from a mental health disorder, while one in five older people and two in five living in care homes are also dealing with depression.
