Processed meat linked to higher heart disease risk

Published on 20/05/2010
Regularly eating processed meats such as bacon and ham can increase a person's chances of suffering from heart disease, according to new research.

A team of scientists from Harvard University found that consuming just 50g of processed meat each day was also enough to raise the risk of diabetes.

However, the study concluded that unprocessed red meat did not bring with it the same risks, despite both groups having a similar saturated fat and cholesterol content.

Published in the journal Circulation, the report suggested that the discrepancy could, therefore, be down to the differences in salt levels and the added preservatives prevalent in processed meats.

The British Heart Foundation's senior heart health dietician Victoria Taylor advised fans of red meat to stick to lean cuts and use healthier cooking methods than frying.

"If you need to add flavour then try using fresh and dried herbs, spices and chillies instead of salt," she added.

As well as increasing the risk of heart disease, unhealthy diets have also been linked to cancer, diabetes and stroke.
