Private medical cover holders at lower risk of superbug infections?

Published on 11/01/2011
New research has suggested that private medical cover holders could be less likely to contract infections while in hospital.

According to a Canadian study, patients placed in private rooms, common within private healthcare, pick up less than half as many infections as those in rooms with multiple beds.

A team from McGill University, in Quebec, studied data from 19,343 admissions to intensive care units at two Montreal hospitals between 2000 and 2005, one of which switched to private rooms only in March 2002, while the other retained a mix of shared and private rooms.

By comparing the infection figures of three common hospital bacteria - MRSA, VRE and C difficile, they found that the combined risk of a patient acquiring an infection fell by 54 per cent after the transition to private rooms.

"We had a great opportunity to study the effect of private rooms on infection acquisition rates because we could compare two close-by university hospitals - less than a mile apart - that serve the same area," researcher Dana Teltsch told Reuters.

"We think private rooms enabled better hygiene," she added.

MRSA is one of the most common hospital bugs and is usually spread through skin-to-skin contact with someone who already has an infection, or through contact with towels, sheets, clothes, dressings or other objects that have been used by someone colonised or infected with the bacteria.
