Private healthcare could be needed by young people with high blood pressure

More than a third of young people may turn to private healthcare in the future to treat the effects of high blood pressure.

A new survey by Lloydspharmacy has revealed that 35 per cent of those aged 16-34 have hypertension, something that is usually associated with older people.

Furthermore, four per cent of the more than 8,000 people tested by the researchers had severe or very severe high blood pressure.

Experts believe that an increasingly sedentary lifestyle among the young, coupled with poor diet and excess alcohol, are to blame for the results.

Shafeeque Mohammed, a health expert at Lloydspharmacy, said: "Although we must bear in mind that a one-off blood pressure test is not conclusive, cumulatively the average readings were higher than anticipated.

"High blood pressure is something that most people don't think they need to worry about until later in life, but it can affect you at any age."

About three in ten adults in the UK have high blood pressure, which is known to increase the risk of suffering from diseases such as heart attack and stroke.
