Poor sleep increasing risk of need for private medical cover treatment for heart disease?

Published on 16/11/2010
People who suffer from poor quality sleep could be more likely to require treatment for heart disease from their private medical cover provider, new research has suggested.

Researchers in the US have found that acute sleep deprivation leads to an increase in production of inflammatory hormones and changes in blood vessel function associated with heart disease.

Their results came from looking at the sleep quality and duration of 525 middle-aged people.

Those who reported six or fewer hours of sleep a night had higher levels of three inflammatory markers.

One of these, C-reactive protein, which is used extensively as a marker of inflammation and heart disease risk, was found to be around 25 per cent higher compared to those reporting between six and nine hours of sleep.

Dr Alanna Morris, a cardiology fellow at Emory University School of Medicine, presented the findings of the study to the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.

She said that more research was needed to determine the exact relationship between sleep and heart disease.

"It remains uncertain whether short sleep duration contributes directly to cardiovascular mortality, or whether it is a mediating or moderating factor," said Dr Morris.

A recent report from BUPA found that over a quarter of the working population admit to feeling tired and unrefreshed when they wake up due to a lack of sleep.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
