People in the UK to benefit from private medical cover after topping EU bad health league?

Published on 15/12/2010
Private medical cover could be beneficial to many people in the UK following a new report revealing the country is one of the unhealthiest in Europe.

According to a study of all 27 European Union (EU) states by the Association of Public Health Observatories, the UK tops the table of the unhealthiest nations in a number of key areas.

In particular, the country was found to have the highest levels of obesity in the EU with the West Midlands region the fattest region in the entire study.

Some 29 per cent of adults in the area are classed as obese., double that of the EU average of 14 per cent.

Furthermore, the report also revealed that cancer mortality rates for women were high in comparison to other EU countries.

The South East region has the highest cancer mortality rates in the UK at 185 per 100,000, followed by Scotland at 179 per 100,000. This compares to a European average of 139.5 per 100,000.

Report author Professor John Wilkinson said: "For some cases the UK is not doing very well. The obvious one is obesity where we are at the top of the league.

"The findings demonstrate that even in parts of the UK where we think we are doing quite well there's a long way to go."

It backs up recent figures from the European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which found 24.5 per cent of adults in the UK are obsese, more than in any other nation in the EU.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
