Patients without health insurance at risk of drug resistant fungus

Published on 07/09/2011

Patients without health insurance may be at risk of a hospital fungus which is now becoming drugs resistant.

Candida albicans is common amongst humans and fairly harmless to health people. However, the fungus is can be fatal to patients with weakened immune systems, and is responsible for a quarter of all blood infections that develop in hospitals.

C. albicans, which starts in the gut, can move to the bloodstream and colonise on plastic surfaces like artificial joints and go on to attack the organs.

Echinocandins is the current range of drugs which fight the fungus, by attacking the enzyme that enables C. albicans to grow. But like other superbugs, including C. difficile, the fungus can evolve and become resistant to such treatment.

Death rates for people with severe infections from the fungus can be up to 50 per cent, since treatment is often given too late.

In 2009, C. albicans infected half the number of patients than MRSA. However, with MRSA cases falling to only 100 a month earlier this summer, C. albicans may soon become widespread.

Dr Carol Munro of Aberdeen University said it was important to develop new ranges of drugs to prevent these figures escalating.

"Often by the time doctors diagnose a fungal infection and treatment is started it is too late."

People with private health insurance will be guaranteed treatment in a private hospital of their choice, dramatically reducing their risk of catching super-bugs like C. albicans.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
