Patients given chance to learn of hospital's shortcomings

Britons are to be given the opportunity to check out how a hospital has been rated by patients before opting to undergo treatment there under new plans announced by the health secretary.

Following on from the launch of a similar initiative that allows patients to compare GPs, Andy Burnham has confirmed that a new site, www.nhs.uk, will be set up to contain information on all of England's hospitals.

As well as statistics concerning mortality rates and prevalence of superbugs, patients will also be provide with information about how convenient a certain hospital is in terms of car parking and policies on visitors.

This will allow people to opt for private health insurance should they deem their nearest hospital to be less than adequate.

Welcoming the news, Michael Summers, vice chairman of the Patients Association, said: "The more information that patients have about local availability of their healthcare and the standards that they are looking for, the better it is.

"We would fully support the launch of this important web tool and would hope that patients will benefit substantially from it."

At the same time, the Patients Association has reported that it currently receives large numbers of complaints from people forced to stay in mixed-sex wards in NHS hospitals, with most unaware of this policy prior to checking in for treatment.
