We’re very proud that we’re supporting six of our female colleagues to further their careers through Chwarae Teg’s Agile Nation 2 programme -
A month on, we checked in with Kim, who is looking to develop her management skills to move up to a Team Manager role in the future, to find out how she’s finding the course so far….
I’m really enjoying the support from Chwarae Teg, and I’ve just attended my first session of the ILM Team Leader course. It's great to know that as well as supporting me in gaining the ILM qualification Chwarae Teg will also be offering me ongoing support for the next 12 months. This includes the opportunity to attend many additional 'pick & mix' and 'Milkshake' sessions ranging from inspiring speeches to wallpapering classes, and ongoing career development guidance. I’m already looking forward to learning a variety of new skills which I will be able to apply to both my work and personal life.
At the start of the first session, we had a lovely warm welcome from Sara, our course leader for the next 10 weeks and as you'd expect from a first session, we were engaged in some 'get to know you' activities. This really helped all of us relax and begin to make new connections.
I've been paired up with my colleague Natalie, also from ActiveQuote, as my 'buddy' for the rest of the course. Although we're a fairly small organisation, Natalie and I haven't had a lot of opportunities to work together as we have very different roles – this is a great opportunity for us to get know each other better and support each other throughout the course. This seems to be a common theme within the course; getting you engaged with everybody on the course, others and using your skills to help develop them. What’s really nice is knowing that as a group we will be more skilled, knowledgeable and confident to continue to develop our careers in Wales.
The first session was mainly focused on the qualities of a leader, identifying which qualities are most important and which ones we would like to develop in ourselves. We then presented our findings to the rest of the group. Definitely throwing you in at the deep end from the outset if you've not had much experience of presentations before but I like the way we're given a positive challenge to break the ice, and with such a friendly bunch it was a good introduction into presentation skills being part of a good leader.
Early on it's clear to see that the main focus of the course is to encourage confidence in yourself and your abilities as a manager to give you the tools to become a strong and knowledgeable leader within your organisation and beyond. The course is delivered in a really positive and encouraging way by Sara and I'm really looking forward to our continuing sessions and the additional opportunities offered by Chwarae Teg's ongoing support.
We’ll be posting further updates as these six ladies progress through the course.
