One in four children received substandard NHS care after surgery

Published on 27/10/2011

A report by a health watchdog has revealed that one in four children received substandard care after surgery in NHS hospitals.

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcomes and Deaths (NCPOD) looked at 378 babies and children who died within 30 days of surgery between April 2008 and March 2010.

26 per cent of cases studied by the NCEPOD, care fell below the "standard that [NCEPOD] advisers would accept from themselves or their institution". In addition, the NCEPOD found that 53% of hospitals do not audit their care systems for children.

Delay in transfer of children to specialist hospitals was a key factor in the 378 child deaths. Too frequently, very ill children have to wait too long to be transferred to specialist centre from district general hospitals.

Dr Kathy Wilinson, a consultant paediatric anaesthetist and co-author of the report, said:

"In many cases the transfer of these critically ill children from district general hospitals to specialist paediatric centres took more than six hours to organise and implement.”

The report follows news of a child dying from a burst appendix after surgeons failed to diagnose the condition and transfer the child to a specialist centre in time.

Child health insurance and family health insurance policies will cover your child for private healthcare. Once stabilised after an emergency operation, your child would be transferred to a private hospital where they would recover surrounded by excellent facilities.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
