Obesity checks proposed as part of healthcare plan for Scottish mothers

Published on 21/09/2010
Mothers and their babies in Scotland could be given obesity checks as part of a post-pregnancy healthcare plan, it has emerged.

The plan forms part of a raft of proposals by the Scottish government aimed at reducing the country's obesity problem.

Under the scheme, mothers would have their weight checked about six months after giving birth and their babies weighed around their first and second birthdays

If the checks lead to concerns about their health, then they could be referred to specialists for advice on making diet and lifestyle changes.

A draft strategy on improving maternal and infant nutrition is to go out for consultation this week, with the final version set to be published next year.

Speaking to the Press Association, public health minister Shona Robison said: "I want to make sure that every child in Scotland has the best start in life to ensure they can live longer, healthier lives. Making sure they have the right nutrition from day one is absolutely vital to this."

The announcement follows recently published figures that revealed life expectancy is Scotland is around a year lower than the EU average.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
