Northern Irish hospital troubled by gynaecology decision

Published on 03/09/2009
A shortage of junior doctors has led to the suspension of certain hospital services in Northern Ireland.

Altnagelvin Hospital has been affected by the decision to move all routine gynaecology services from Erne and Tyrone County hospitals.

The Western Trust was forced to suspend its services when it was only able to appoint one new junior doctor when it had expected to create six new positions.

Some women may now potentially have to make a 100 mile round trip to Altnagelvin for exams and treatments due to the suspension of the service.

According to the BBC, Dr Josephine Deehan, A GP based in Omagh, said: "Because of the large geographical area that has to be covered, from the most southern aspect of Fermanagh to the north of the province, I think the distances involved are such that patient safety can't be assured."

All routine and emergency gynaecology patients, as well as in and out-patients will now be sent to Altnagelvin, although maternity services will be maintained at Erne.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
