NHS waiting times inconsistent, report suggests

Published on 18/01/2010
Waiting times for access to NHS treatment of musculoskeletal and mental health conditions vary considerably nationwide, according to new research.

A study carried out by Health Insurance & Protection magazine found that UK patients with musculoskeletal problems are waiting for over six weeks for physiotherapy in more than half of England's primary care trusts (PCTs), a period that rises to 18 weeks in the nine slowest establishments.

Meanwhile, Brits affected by depression or other mental disorders typically face waiting times of more than six months for treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy and counselling on the NHS, however one PCT reported waits of over a year for its counselling services.

Investing in health insurance can mean faster access to medical care and reduced risk of financial strain due to hospitalisation or chronic illness.

Figures show that outpatients waited an average of 4.6 weeks in January 2009 compared to 7.4 weeks in August 2007.

The Department of Health also reported that the average wait for treatment of inpatients admitted to NHS hospitals is 8.6 weeks.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
