NHS waiting lists now on the rise for GP appointments

Published on 21/09/2011

More than one million patients wait longer than three weeks or more to see their GP, a new study has revealed.

A poll of more than 2,000 patients by private medical insurance providers Aviva Health has suggested that 5 per cent of patients waited longer than a fortnight to see their family doctor, and 2 per cent waited longer than three weeks.

If these figures are representative of Britain, more than one million patients routinely wait nearly a month to see a doctor.

In addition, more than a quarter of patients questioned were unable to get an appointment within a week, and two thirds were not able to see a GP within two days.

The poll, commissioned by the Daily Mail, also revealed that only 30 per cent were able to get an appointment within 48 hours.

Waiting times have increased since the Government scrapped a bonus which encouraged GPs to see patients within 48 hours.

GPs say they have to spend increasing amounts of time filling in forms, attending meetings and appraising their progress.

David Stout, director of the NHS Confederation’s Primary Care Trust Network, which represents primary care trusts, said:

‘With the removal of government targets for GP access and growing financial pressures throughout the NHS, it is not surprising there will be an increase in some places in the numbers of patients waiting longer.’

If you are worried about the speedy diagnosis of illnesses, make sure you choose a health insurance policy that covers inpatient and day patient fees and diagnostic tests.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
