NHS staff will strike on November 30

Published on 04/11/2011

NHS staff and managers have voted to strike at the end of the month, in a move that Downing Street warns will be damaging to Britain and the public services.

82 per cent of NHS employees responding to a ballot issued by union Unison said they wanted to take part in the mass public sector walkout due to take place on 30 November.

Respondents included NHS workers, including nurses, hospital porters, midwives and cleaners, who are angry at proposals to raise retirement age, increase employee contribution rates and scrap final salary pensions.

However, turn out for the ballot was low, with only one in three voting, leaving less than a quarter of the membership in favour of striking. The low turnout led to ministers questioning the legitimacy of the vote.

Unison’s general secretary Dave Prentis said: “The decisive yes vote in the ballot reflects the deep concern that our members have over government ministers’ proposals for their pensions.

“We support the TUC day of action on 30 November, but will be negotiating right up to then and beyond to get a fair deal for our members.

Yesterday the government made a renewed offer to unions including a pledge to protect those closest to retirement from some of the changes. David Prentis said: “Yesterday’s statement in parliament was a marked improvement on earlier proposals.”

If NHS staff and managers strike at the end of the month, there will be huge disruption to public services, including hospitals and clinics. With private medical insurance, you will avoid the repercussions of the NHS strikes, and maintain peace of mind about your healthcare.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
