NHS should lower bowel cancer screening age to 50, charity has warned

Published on 28/09/2011

A new study has revealed that bowel cancer is far more common in men in their early 50s than originally thought, a fact which may encourage people to take out private health insurance for cancer cover in the future.

Results of the major study have prompted Mark Flannagan, chief executive of charity Beating Bowel Cancer, to call for the NHS Bowel Screening Programme to lower screening age from 60 to 50 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Carried out by the Austrian Society for Gastroenterology and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the analysis of more than 40,000 colonoscopies found that one in five men between 50 and 60 had potentially cancerous tumours.

Polyps were found in 18.5 per cent of men in their early 50s, compared to 10.7 per cent of women. Whilst polyps themselves are harmless, they can develop into cancer in the future.

Mark Flannagan said: "Beating Bowel Cancer has campaigned for screening to begin from 50 throughout the rest of the UK, as it does in Scotland.

"These results suggest that, particularly for men, earlier screening could save more lives from the UK's second biggest cancer killer."

More than 16,000 people die of bowel cancer in the UK every year. The age range for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening is being extended to 74, but there are currently no plans to lower it.

Health insurance customers should visit their GP if they experience any unusual symptoms. With private medical insurance, you will be treated for bowel cancer in a private hospital of your choice with excellent facilities. Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
