NHS reliance on junior doctors to lead to more people taking out private medical cover?

Published on 02/12/2010
More people maybe tempted to take out private medical cover following a new report highlighting the NHS's over-reliance on junior doctors.

According to a census conducted by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), NHS hospitals do not have enough senior doctors present to care for patients out of hours and at weekends, instead relying on junior doctors to pick up the slack.

It found that consultant physicians are currently overstretched, working an average of 50 hours a week, which is four and a half hours more than their contracts.

The group is now calling on the NHS to reschedule working patterns to provide better care for patients out of hours.

It recommends that any hospital admitting acutely ill patients should have a consultant physician on-site for at least 12 hours per day, seven days a week, who should have no other duties scheduled during this time.

"Despite major improvements in the care of acutely ill patients which were led by the RCP following our major report in 2007, patients are still not getting the care they deserve at night and at weekends," said RCP president Sir Richard Thompson.

"Too many junior doctors are covering too many very ill patients, and this has to change. Our evidence shows that a predominantly consultant-delivered medical service is the best way to improve patient care."

It follows the recent Dr Foster report, which assessed 147 hospital trusts in England and found that 19 of them had patient death rates greater than expected over the past year.
