NHS reforms will allow patients to register with a GP near work

Published on 03/11/2011

A new deal between GPs and the Government will give patients more choice over which GP practise they can register with. Patients with private medical insurance will also benefit from this change, being able to handpick their healthcare through every stage of treatment.

The new plan, which will be tested next April, will allow patients to remain registered with family doctors after moving to a different neighbourhood, as well as choosing to register with a doctor near to their workplace or children’s school. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said:

“Patients often tell me that they want more choice over which practice they can register with, so I am pleased that this deal allows three major pilots to be launched across England that will allow patients to register at practices away from where they live, such as near to where they work.

“The deal will also mean that patients may not be forced to change GP surgery if they move locally.

“This will save up to three million people who move locally every year the hassle of re-registering as they can remain with the practice of their choice.”

There will be a variety of different trials starting next April to test this new deal. In one trial, patients will be able to register with a practise in a convenient place, like near work. If they ever need a home visit, their local primary care trust will provide a GP.

In another trial, patients will remain registered with their home practise but able to visit any GP surgery as a temporary resident.

Patients with health insurance are already able to choose the hospital they want to be treated in, and the specialist they want to treat them. This new change will allow them to have control of every part of their healthcare. Compare health insurance policies now to benefit from private medical insurance.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
