NHS 'postcode lottery' will be exaggerated by health reform

Published on 01/09/2011

Legal experts warn that the NHS ‘postcode lottery’ will be exaggerated if the Government’s health reforms go ahead, increasing the need for supplementary private health insurance.

The NHS postcode lottery is a term describing the variation in NHS hospital standards across the UK. Although some hospitals are meeting their waiting list targets, many are far below the Government recommended standard.

A ‘hands off’ clause has now been proposed by the Government, in which unelected local commissioners will be responsible for providing NHS services. This will make it difficult for the Government to intervene if the standards of certain hospitals continue to fall.

Lawyers who analysed the Health and Social Care Bill suggest that proposed legislation will enable to Health Secretary to ‘wash his hands’ of the NHS.

In the past, Government intervention has led to dramatic and positive changes in the delivery of NHS services. If the Bill passed, such intervention would be difficult, and the badly performing hospitals could not easily be pulled up.

Before shopping for health insurance you should investigate your local NHS hospital to see what they are doing well, and where they are failing.

Most private health insurance providers, like Bupa and PruHealth, now offer a ‘pick and mix’ scheme which will allow you to supplement the service you already received from the NHS. Compare health insurance policies online now to prepare you for the proposed NHS reforms.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
