NHS hospital closes after an outbreak of C. difficle

Published on 26/08/2011
An NHS hospital in South Lanarkshire has been closed to new patients after an outbreak of C. difficile.

Since June, seven patients have tested positive for the infection at Lockhart Hospital. The health board said one of the patients had since died, although C. difficile was not the primary cause of death.

NHS Lanarkshire has said it had reinforced infection control systems within the hospital and improved its hygiene procedures.

Dr Chris Mackintosh, associate medical director of primary care at NHS Lanarkshire, said: "Our monitoring procedures have allowed us to identify these cases early and take rapid action to reinforce our infection control systems within the hospital.

"This has included enhanced cleaning, hand hygiene and prescribing measures.

The 30-bed hospital in Scotland provides medical, rehabilitation and terminal care and has stopped admitting new patients until the infection is under control.

Dr Mackintosh said that stopping the infection is the board’s main priority. "C difficile is an organism that some people have naturally in the bowel," he said. "C difficile normally doesn't cause any problems in healthy people.”

People with private health insurance will be guaranteed treatment in a private hospital of their choice, dramatically reducing their risk of catching super-bugs like C. difficile.

No.1 health insurance broker as rated by customers

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
