NHS foundation trusts finances criticised

Published on 11/08/2009
NHS foundation trusts' financial plans may be "over-optimistic".

Monitor, the independent regulator of NHS foundation trusts, has suggested that the potential funding challenge may be difficult to pass.

Stephen Hay, the chief operating officer of Monitor, said that plans for the years from 2011 may pose the biggest problems.

"As funding begins to tighten, areas of financial and operational weakness may start to appear in some trusts," he said.

"It's crucial for foundation trust boards to address these situations early and effectively to meet increasing challenges from 2011."

However, he did add that many NHS foundation trusts were "consistently improving the quality and robustness of their financial planning".

According to Monitor, 90 per cent of foundation trusts were expecting to meet all or most of the national standards and targets set to them this year.

Last month an analysis by The King's Fund and the Institute for Fiscal Studies indicated that there will likely be significant funding problem for the NHS, with many government departments having to cut budgets to maintain spending levels.
