NHS disastrous IT scheme to be axed, after wasting over £12bn of taxpayer's money

Published on 22/09/2011

Labour’s disastrous £11.4billion National Programme for IT is to be axed after facing repeated criticism over its cost and technical problems.

Set up in 2002, the aim of the project was to create a digital single network which would allow NHS staff across England to access the medical records of any patient.

But earlier this month it was disclosed that only 36 doctors have joined the pilot project, and it has faced repeated criticism from the National Audit Office.

Over the past 9 years the scheme has thrown away at least £12.7billion of the taxpayer’s money, a sum which would have paid the salaries of more than 60,000 nurses for ten years.

The decision to accelerate the dismantling of the scheme has been made by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and Francis Maude, the Minister for the Cabinet Office.

The project will be replaced by cheaper regional schemes, in which local GPs can develop or buy their own computer systems. A new national watchdog will be established to ensure such huge sums will not be squandered again.

"Labour’s IT programme let down the NHS and wasted taxpayers’ money by imposing a top-down IT system on the local NHS, which didn’t fit their needs," Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, will say.

"We will be moving to an innovative new system driven by local decision-making. This is the only way to make sure we get value for money from IT systems that better meet the needs of a modernised NHS."

With the NHS planning to make £20bn worth of costs over the next 4 years, there will be some changes in the heathcare system which may not benefit the British public.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.
