NHS continuing to make medication mistakes

Published on 04/09/2009
A report has been published into incidents of the NHS giving out the wrong medication to patients.

In total, 72,482 occurrences were studied for the paper, named Safety in Doses.

According to the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), which created the report, the high figure indicates that there has been an improvement in the documenting of incidents.

Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS medical director, said: "We expect all NHS organisations to examine the NPSA's recommendations carefully and where necessary take steps to implement them in order to ensure that the services they provide are as safe as possible."

Consultant pharmacist at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Gillian Cavell suggested that the report indicates "that serious medication errors can happen in any trust".

Around 96 per cent of the mistakes had no or low harm to patients.

It has been a troubling week for the NHS, with a report from Bournemouth University suggesting that prisoners often received better quality food that people in public hospitals.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
