NHS called to improve inequalities in dental care

Published on 03/11/2009
There is an "unacceptable and growing chasm" in the levels of tooth decay across UK communities, according to new research.

The British Dental Association (BDA) recently reported that there is a marked difference in the dental health of children from socially deprived areas of the country and those from wealthier parts.

Results of a national study conducted by the association found that 60 per cent of disadvantaged kids show signs of tooth decay compared to 40 per cent of those from more affluent backgrounds.

Commenting on the findings, Richard Wood, NHS Somerset's dental commissioning lead, said: "We know that low-income, poor education and lack of life chances can be a major factor in how healthy your teeth and mouth is.

"This is particularly evident when comparing the harm done to people's teeth and increased risk of mouth cancer caused by excessive smoking and drinking."

In response, NHS dentists in Somerset have launched an initiative to reduce the level of inequalities regarding access to dental care.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
