New testing method to benefit HPV diagnosis?

Published on 17/03/2010
Offering self-sampling devices to women may help increase screening coverage for cervical cancer among high-risk patients who do not attend regular testing.

That is according to a new report published in the British Medical Journal, which suggests home-testing may serve as a feasible and effective method of screening for the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to cancer of the cervix.

However, a spokesperson for Imperial College Healthcare claimed that self-testing does not select those who need further investigation carefully enough, as 80 per cent of 25 year-olds will have a positive result at some stage.

He said: "Self-test HPV tests are reasonably accurate but, as with all tests, it is the interpretation of the results that is most important.

"The Jade Goody effect was enormous and we are still seeing benefits for those who get screened and those who allow themselves to be followed up rather than ignore the warnings."

Cancer Research UK states that there are around 2,800 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in the UK each year - that is around 55 women every week.

It is the 12th most common cancer in women nationwide and the third most common gynaecological cancer after uterus (womb) and ovarian.

Proactive, efficient, and offered me insurance I need. I would say half price I would end up paying if I did it by myself. Many thanks.

Excellent service. Explained everything in detail and really helped to find the right insurance best suited to my needs - which wasn't necessarily the most expensive.
